The main event on VeggieTales: Sumo of the Opera is the title featurette, a comic concoction of Gilbert Sullivan and Rocky. Veggie Tales hero Larry the Cucumber plays the Italian Scallion (okay, so he was raised by a family of onions), a professional wrestler big on quips but not on finishing anything he starts, in or out of the ring. When he’s challenged to a match with the sizable Apollo Gourd, Scallion is faced with the biggest decision of his life: Does he have what it takes to complete the task? This particular VeggieTales animation treat for kids doesn’t reinvent any specific Bible story, but it does underscore the importance of perseverance. Also on the disc are a few extras, including “Going Up,” a more-or-less silent comedy in which a Veggie Tales version of the Three Stooges re-creates the famous Laurel and Hardy routine about pushing a piano up a long flight of stairs. –Tom Keogh

Lordy lordy, there is some serious testifying going on here. What’s more, the titles (”Let Us Worship Him,” “Just a Prayer Away,” “The Battle Is the Lord’s”), the setting (a Washington, D.C. church), and the febrile audience response leave no doubt that Yolanda Adams is a gospel singer. But this two-hour program (including interviews that can be viewed separately) has a decidedly contemporary feel. The music has the sound of commercial RB or smooth jazz; the influence of artists like Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway is readily apparent; there are costume changes and a light show; there’s even a video (for “Gotta Have Love”) that can only be described as hip-hop. That’s not to say that Adams plans to go the route traveled by Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and others who made the transition from the pew to the pop charts. But one thing is certain: this ain’t your grandmother’s church music. Glory hallelujah! –Sam Graham

The latest in an animated Christian children’s series, this video teaches kids the importance of standing up to peer pressure through a thinly disguised Bible story. When Bob the Tomato, our host, sees that Larry the Cucumber is trying to fit into what’s “cool” by wearing an oven mitt as a hat, he tells Larry that it’s important to be true to yourself no matter what the consequences. Bob tells Larry a story about three vegetables, Rag, Shack, and Benny, who are held hostage in a factory and forced to make chocolate bunnies. When the owner, Mr. Nezzar, takes a liking to them, he offers to promote them if they will only worship a giant chocolate bunny.

The story is based on the book of Daniel in the Old Testament, in which three friends stand up to King Nebuchadnezzar, refusing to worship a false idol. The slavery and death themes may be too dark for kids under 7, but the animation and songs are fun. –Elisabeth Keating
